First of all, let’s look at a crucial rule for our non-French readers: in France, pharmacies hold a strict monopoly on dispensing medications. Unlike in the US, the UK, or many other countries, you cannot buy basic pain relievers like ibuprofen or paracetamol in a supermarket.

In other words, while everyday cosmetics can be found in supermarkets within certain limits, the vast majority of healthcare products are only available in pharmacies. This obviously includes prescription drugs, but also most over-the-counter travel medicines.

While reimbursed medications cost exactly the same everywhere in France, prices for non-reimbursed items are completely unregulated.

Here is the catch: because pharmacies have a monopoly, they are free to set their own prices for non-reimbursed items, and these rates are notoriously non-transparent.

Unless you walk into every single pharmacy to ask for the price of a specific non-reimbursed medicine, it is impossible to compare. These prices are generally not listed in storefronts, rarely posted online, and staff will almost never give them to you over the phone.

Open every day until 9:00 pm (and now also on Sundays until 8:00 pm), it is constantly packed.

When you compare their prices to standard neighborhood chemists, you immediately understand why… This is hands down the cheapest pharmacy in Paris!

You will encounter a massive number of international tourists at Citypharma in Paris, particularly from Asia and North America. They flock here to buy French beauty products, which are significantly cheaper in France than in their home countries.

The shop offers unbeatable prices, often 10% to 30% cheaper than elsewhere…

Why is Citypharma the cheapest pharmacy in Paris?

The key factor behind Citypharma’s highly competitive prices lies primarily in its staggering buying volume. In short, the more stock a pharmacy purchases, the better it can negotiate wholesale discounts with skincare brands and manufacturers.

• The ground floor of Citypharma houses the main parapharmacie, featuring cosmetics, dermatological skincare, oral hygiene, and mother-and-baby products. Checkout counters are located here, near the exits.
• On the first floor of Citypharma, you will find a wide variety of dietary supplements and natural medicine, including essential oils, nutrition products, phytotherapy, herbal remedies, and aromatherapy.
• Finally, the top floor of Citypharma is dedicated to the actual prescription and over-the-counter chemist space, where you will find medications, homeopathy, medical and orthopedic gear, as well as veterinary products. Checkout counters are also available on this level.

Pharmacie Monge: a discount pharmacy in Paris

The Pharmacie Monge is located on the square of the same name in the 5th arrondissement of Paris (the Latin Quarter).

It has the great advantage of being more spacious than Citypharma and is open 24/7. It also opens every other Sunday on average, from 8:30 am to 8:00 pm (you can check their schedule on their website).

In addition to traditional in-store shopping, Pharmacie Monge offers online sales for over-the-counter products. They even provide a free *drive-in* pickup service once you reach a certain purchase amount!

Pharmacie Monge has expanded over the years. You can find two other locations in Paris (in the 15th and 18th arrondissements), as well as three regional pharmacies in Orléans, Aix-en-Provence, and Cannes.

To be fair, these pharmacies are not ideal if you want to quietly ask for medical recommendations, given the massive crowds and the peak-hour rush. However, they allow you to make massive savings!

Discounts can reach 40% to 50% on a wide range of products, making them even cheaper than French online pharmacies—and you do not have to pay for international shipping fees.

La Grande Pharmacie de la Porte Maillot (17th)

If you find Saint-Germain-des-Prés (Citypharma) too far out of your way, this pharmacy is a formidable alternative! Located right at the metro exit, it has established itself as one of the cheapest shopping spots in western Paris.

• Address: 66 avenue de la Grande Armée, 75017 Paris.
• Access: metro line 1 or RER C (Porte Maillot station).
• Opening hours: very extensive! It is generally open from 8:00 am to 9:00 pm on weekdays, and also on Saturdays.

Why we love it?

• The prices: it might be slightly more expensive on average than Citypharma. However, it aggressively aligns its prices with Left Bank “low-cost” rates, particularly on major French skincare brands (Avène, La Roche-Posay, Nuxe).
• The space: although very popular, it is often considered more “breathable” and better organized than Citypharma. The aisles are wider, making your product hunt much easier!
• The advice: despite the high volume of customers, there is usually plenty of staff available to give you quick advice on a skincare product.

The mouse’s tip 🐭: this is the ideal stop if you are staying in the Ternes or Arc de Triomphe neighborhoods. Drop by in the morning before starting your sightseeing, as the atmosphere is much calmer than at the end of the day! 😉
